Self drive tour in Norway, Bergen-Bergen

See the highlights of the Sognefjord and the Hardangerfjord - Enjoy the Hanseatic city of Bergen, with the old Bryggen wharf on the World's Heritage List, a relaxing stay at the beautifully located, excellent Solstrand Fjord hotel with view of the fjord and the Folgefonna glacier, a spectacular drive along the scenic outer parts of the Hardangerfjord with the well kept, typical wooden boathouses, the ferry cruises on the Hardangerfjord, the village of Utne with the picturesque Agatunet selection of tiny wooden houses, a 2 hour fjord cruise with car ferry on the dramatic Naeroyfjord branch of the Sognefjord, the beautiful Balestrand fjord village with the typical, Swiss style wooden villas, the Hopperstad Stave church in Vik, the spectacular Vikafjell mountain road.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Bergen

Pick up the rental car at the airport. A 30 min drive to Bergen for an overnight stay at the charming Hotel Park Pension or similar hotel. Enjoy the tiny old wooden houses at the Nordnes peninsula, the old wooden Bryggen wharf, the marvelous view from mount Floyen on top of the Funicular railroad.

Day 2 - Bergen area-Solstrand/Bjoernefjord

Spend the morning in Bergen and drive to the beautifully located Solstrand Fjord hotel, offering a marvelous view of the fjord and the Folgefonna glacier.

En route you can visit the picturesque Troldhaugen villa; the home of the composer Edvard Grieg. Idyllic garden.

Drive across the Fanafjell mountain to the local Lysefjord, with an optional visit to the tiny Lysoen island with the charming villa of the violinist Ole Bull before you continue past the tiny Lysekloster ruin to the village of Os and the excellent Solstrand Fjord hotel, beautifully located by the Bjoernefjord.

Day 3 - Solstrand-Hardangerfjord

Drive along the picturesque outer parts of the Hardangerfjord before you cross the fjord by ferry to the tiny village of Utne and the picturesque historic wooden Utne hotel. You will pass the Fusa area with the tiny Holdhus church, the scenic Strandebarm area with the authentic old boat houses with the typical stone roofs, the village of Norheimsund with the interesting Fartøyvernsenteret, also a museum, where repairing and preservation of old wooden boats are their main activity.

Day 4 - Hardangerfjord-Sognefjord

Drive to the inner parts of the Hardangerfjord, then via the mountain village of Voss on to the Sognefjord and the village of Gudvangen, with a scenic car ferry fjord cruise on the famous Naeroyfjord branch (the narrow fjord).  After Voss you can make a detour via the breathtaking Stalheimskleiven hairpin road, or just enjoy the view of the Naeroy valley from the Stalheim hotel.

Drive along the northern side of the main Sognefjord to the scenic fjord village of Balestrand.

Overnight at the historic wing of the Kvikne's hotel, including their famous dinner buffet in the evening.

Day 5 - Sognefjord-Bergen

Ferry crossing to Vik, then across the beautiful Vikafjell mountain road via Voss to Bergen. Optional stop at the Hopperstad Stave Church in Vik.

1 night in Bergen.
