Bergen - the capital of Fjord Norway

Bergen is ideally located in the middle of Fjord Norway, with easy access to the Norwegian fjords.
Bergen is beautifully located on the Western coast, surrounded by 7 mountains, with tiny wooden houses clinging to the hillsides. The waterfront is really the heart of Bergen, with the Fish Market and the picturesque old wooden Bryggen wharf - a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Bryggen - UNESCO World Heritage site

Bryggen, the old wooden wharf of Bergen, is a reminder of the town’s importance as part of the Hanseatic League’s trading empire from the 14th to the mid-16th century. From 1350 to 1750 the Hanseatic merchants traded stockfish and grains from their office in Bergen.
Today, some 62 buildings remain of this former townscape.
Bryggen was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1979.

The tiny Hanseatic Museum shows how the German merchants lived and worked at Bryggen.

Floibanen - the Bergen Funicular

The starting point of the the Funicular is centrally located, just a short walk from the Fish Market. The Funicular takes you to the top of mount Floyen (appr 400 ms above sea level), offering a marvellous view of the city and the surrounding scenery.
There are excellent hikes and well marked trails, including a nice hike down to the city centre.

Troldhaugen - Edvard Grieg's home

The picturesque wooden villa "Troldhaugen", Nina and Edvard Grieg’s home, was built in 1885. The villa is located in the outskirts of Bergen (Hop), surrounded by a beautiful garden by the Nordasvannet lake. The couple lived there the last 22 summers of Edvard Grieg’s life. Troldhaugen became a museum in May 1928.

The museum consists of the villa, the composer’s hut and the gravesite. In 1985 the concert hall Troldsalen was inaugurated, and in 1995 the museum building opened.

Tiny wooden houses & narrow streets

Bergen has several, well preserved authentic areas with picturesque, tiny wooden houses, such as the hillside above and around the Funicular station and at the Nordnes peninsula. Both areas are within easy walking distance of the centre.
